Waste & Recycling

There are several recycling schemes, which may vary slightly depending on the community. Most homes have two rubbish bins that are emptied on alternate weeks: a green one for biodegradable waste, and a grey one for other household waste.

Paper is collected fortnightly, and a van collects small chemical waste such as light bulbs, batteries, and harmful cleaning products. Bottle banks are located outside many supermarkets, as are collection points for unwanted clothing, and sometimes also batteries. The price of bottled beers and soft drinks includes a small deposit that is refundable on returning the empty containers.

Waste and recycling instructions
Waste is collected in a the volume/frequency system. The waste disposal rate is calculated by  weight and type of produced waste.

All containers are equipped with a chip. This chip contains the address, type of waste and  volume of the container. Each time the container is emptied by the garbage truck, the variables are recorded by special equipment and the waste rate is calculated.

More information about this waste system is available at www.rd4.nl (in Dutch).

  • Biobak: A green plastic bin used for biodegradable kitchen and garden waste (GFT)
