The spacious, tranquil, hilly countryside of the Maastricht Region is bordered by historic towns (Maastricht, Sittard) and major tourist attractions (Parkstad). The variety that can be found in this region of only 25 x 25 kilometres is astonishing, appealing, and very different from the rest of the Netherlands. Dutch people who visit here often feel they are abroad. And those who do venture across the border to the Voer region in Belgium or to Aachen in Germany or Hasselt and Liège in Belgium have all of Europe at their feet.
The Maastricht Region's hilly surroundings make it ideally suited for a great many sporting activities. The region has all the ingredients needed for enjoyable and active bicycle trips: a compact historic city centre with a great many architectural highlights as well as a great deal of natural and scenic beauty. For the adventurous at heart, a variety of additional activities are available, including kayaking or canoeing trips and climbing or skiing in the Netherlands’ largest indoor ski piste. Even the underground passageways have been made accessible for mountain bikers who enjoy a challenge! And after a day of strenuous exercise, rest and relax at a spa or enjoy a yoga class.
