The Maastricht Region is particularly well known for its automotive sector thanks to the presence of Nedcar. Just as important and significant for the region are the large number of companies that make parts for the automobile industry.

The existence of a harbour with a direct link to Rotterdam and Antwerp is a factor contributing to the competitive power of the Nedcar production location. In order to improve the  automotive sector, an agreement is currently being prepared relating to the following matters:

• The Yard, next to the Nedcar site, will be reserved for the distribution of cars produced at Nedcar. This will lay the basis for achieving a possible expansion of production at Nedcar.
• Improving the link between the harbour in Born and the business cluster surrounding Nedcar, Business Park Swentibold and Business Park Noord.
• Strengthening clusters with regard automotive materials, including a link to that focus area at the national innovation centre (Automotive Technology Centre (ATC)).
• Application possibilities for alternative energy at Nedcar are being investigated.
