A great many service sector organisations, both public and private, are located in the Maastricht Region. These include large ICT companies such as KPN, T-systems, Vodafone, Getronics, Logica CMG, Atos Origin, Ericsson and CapGemini.

The region also has a concentration of renowned knowledge institutes, including Zuyd University, the Open University in Heerlen, Maastricht University, the University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University. The combination of businesses and institutions means that the region is an interesting working environment. Furthermore, as a result of the excellent infrastructure and the central European location, the region offers excellent opportunities for further development. Part of this infrastructure is the existence of an Internet exchange (in Heerlen) and the development of shared service centres and data centres. The result is that in both the public and private sectors, cooperation is characterised by greater innovation and efficiency using joint facilities resulting from linked data systems and knowledge.
