As a result of the reliable network of waterways, roads, pipelines, railway lines and airports, the Maastricht Region has a solid logistics infrastructure.

The infrastructure is completed by the existence of four rail terminals (some of which are dedicated) and two water terminals (Stein and Born). The presence of good logistics connections in an important business location factor for large companies such as SABIC, DSM and Nedcar. The infrastructure offers opportunities for the development of new economic activity in logistics services. The development in the immediate vicinity and the Mitsubishi European distribution centre location are good examples of such activity. The region is stimulating this development and contributing to offsetting those investments in the water terminal that are unlikely to provide a return. The Municipality of Sittard-Geleen is also participating in the development of the Holtum Noord 2 business park.
