In the twenty-first century, there is an emphasis on the production and application possibilities of environmentally-friendly fuels (sun, wind, hydropower, hydrogen, geothermal, biomass, etc.) and innovation.
The energy transition is in full swing and will result in the next few years in a huge boost for our region, and its effects will be felt throughout the entire Eindhoven - Leuven - Aachen Triangle (ELAT).
The Maastricht Region and energy are inextricably linked. In the twentieth century coal was extracted from the mines, and new energy is now one of the most important economic focus sectors. The Maastricht Region is particularly characterised by developments with regard to solar cell technology, such as the Solar Academy. Solland Solar is an important company in the region with regard to this technology. In addition, promising developments are taking place in many other sectors, such as electric cars. The close proximity of RWTH Aachen University, with its high-quality knowledge institutes, offers access to unique knowledge and research.
Furthermore, Energy Hills is located in the region. Here, innovative companies collaborate with top research and training institutes on energy solutions for our future! Energy Hills is the largest cross-border energy network in Europe. Thanks to the combination of the production of high-quality raw materials and the manufacture of products such as solar cells and LED lamps, the Maastricht Region is offering a home to this growth sector. The core of Energy Hills is located in the Aachen (D) - Heerlen (NL) region.
