In Maastricht Region, businesses, researchers, knowledge institutions and public authorities work together to find solutions to global challenges. Much of this collaboration takes place on the Brightlands campuses. Three of these are located in the Maastricht Region: in Maastricht, Heerlen and Sittard-Geleen. It is precisely the connection between health, digitalisation and circularity that offers scope for new ideas and applications.

Circularity and new materials

How can we make industry less dependent on fossil-based raw materials? At the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen, companies and researchers are working on new materials, circular raw materials and more sustainable production processes. From the production of cleaner materials based on biomass and recycled textiles to the conversion of waste paper into valuable raw materials.

Data and artificial intelligence

How can data and artificial intelligence help tackle societal challenges? At the Brightlands Data & AI Campus in Heerlen, businesses, researchers, public authorities and students are working on smart digital applications. These range from AI-driven building scans that enable reusable materials to be traded on a digital marketplace, to autonomous security systems featuring sensors, drones and AI filters.

Health and prevention

How can we ensure that people stay healthy for longer, and how can we make healthcare better and more accessible? At the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, researchers, healthcare professionals and businesses are working on innovations in the fields of health and life sciences. From regenerating knee cartilage using the patient’s own cells to diagnosing Alzheimer’s from a single tear.

Listening to the Universe

The Einstein Telescope demonstrates how the region is preparing for the next generation of scientific breakthroughs. The joint bid by the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany brings together researchers, businesses and public authorities. As a professional, you too can benefit from this.
