Maastricht: the intimate metropolis

Maastricht is a compact, international city in the heart of Europe. For generations, the city has attracted students, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals from home and abroad. This international character is evident everywhere: at the university, in the many knowledge institutions, in the workplace and on the streets. At the same time, Maastricht feels manageable and personal. Thanks to its compact city centre and short distances, amenities, culture and nature are always close at hand.

International and European

Maastricht’s international outlook dates back a long way. Thanks to its location at the crossroads of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, the city developed into a place where trade, cultures and ideas converged. In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty was signed here, marking a significant step in European cooperation and laying the foundations for the introduction of the euro.

Europe continues to play an important role in the city today. Maastricht University is one of the most international universities in Europe and attracts students from over a hundred countries. In addition, various international and European organisations are based in Maastricht, including the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), the European Journalism Centre (EJC) and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM). Together, they contribute to an international environment in which work is carried out on a daily basis to address social issues with a European and global impact.
