Listening to the Universe
Can we hear black holes? The Einstein Telescope is a planned underground gravitational-wave detector for which the border region of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany is a candidate site. It is a major scientific project requiring expertise in fields such as physics, engineering, precision technology and data.

How do you produce meat without slaughtering animals? Mosa Meat is working in Maastricht on cultured meat: meat produced from animal cells. An innovation at the intersection of biotechnology, nutrition and more sustainable food production.

Cities Reuse
How can materials in a city be reused? Using AI, MAECONOMY identifies which materials have been used in buildings, roads and other structures, and when they will become available. This enables existing materials to be located, certified and resold.

Plastic made from plants
How do you make plastics without fossil-based raw materials? At the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Avantium is developing technology to convert plant-based raw materials into new building blocks for the chemical industry. This leads to the creation of new, recyclable plastics for applications such as packaging and textiles.
